10 Reasons to Take the Stairs Every Day

People who live or work in multiple story buildings have a choice of whether to use the convenience of the elevator or take the stairs. Most people are prone to take the path of least resistance and go for the elevators without even thinking about the advantages of taking the stairs. Here are 10 reasons you may want to consider taking the stairs every day instead of riding the elevator.

  1. Exercise – Who needs a stair climber exercise machine when you can use the real thing every day? Taking the stairs is an easy way to incorporate an exercise routine into your every day life with no added expense. Start with a few flights and keep adding more. You’ll be amazed by how far you can go.
  2. Lose weight – Taking the stairs is a great way to burn some extra calories on a daily basis. Try using the stairs every day for 2 weeks and see how much weight you can lose without even dieting.
  3. Cardio – Climbing the stairs gives you a good cardiovascular workout. If you need some extra cardio work, but have trouble fitting it into your busy schedule, take the stairs each day.
  4. No waiting – If you have to wait for elevators every day, you’d be surprised how much time you waste every week. Why spend that time standing around when you can keep moving?
  5. Quicker – If you only need to go up or down a few floors, taking the stairs can actually be quicker than the elevator. Try timing it every day for a week and see if you can beat the elevator riders up or down.
  6. Avoid crowding – There are never any crowds on the stairs, but elevators can put you uncomfortably close to a bunch of strangers, especially if you’re claustrophobic. Instead of packing into a crowded elevator, enjoy the wide open spaces on the stairs.
  7. Leave room for disabled – If you’re an able bodied person, why take up the space that could be better utilized by someone disabled? You have a choice of which way to go and they don’t, so enjoy the mobility you have.
  8. Avoid annoying people – Nothing’s worse than being stuck in a confined space with someone you can’t stand. If that annoying coworker or neighbor is an elevator rider, taking the stairs can help you avoid an uncomfortable situation.
  9. No odors – How many times have you been stuck on an elevator with someone who has really bad body odor or strong perfume? There are no such worries on the stairs. Even if you pass by someone with an unpleasant smell, it’s just for a fleeting moment. It’s hard to hold your breath for several floors on the elevator.
  10. Relieve stress – Taking the stairs is a great way to relieve stress and lower your blood pressure. Getting a little more physical exercise every day not only lowers your BP, but improves your mental health as well.

Of course going upstairs is more of a workout than going downstairs, so you want to keep that in mind if you’re using the stairs for exercise. If you’re getting tired while climbing several flights in the morning, think of the reward you’ll get by going back down later. By taking the stairs every day you’ll improve your physical health, lose weight and avoid potentially nasty situations in elevators. Make taking the stairs part of your daily routine.
